Bosch DLR165K Digital Laser Range Finder Kit Review
As a land surveyor I appreciate the compact size, rugged construction and accuracy of this device. It can be used in three measuring modes; metric, feet/inches/fractional inches and decimal feet – which I use for my work. It really does measure to a 1/16th inch. I think Spectra Precision, a manufacturer of survey instruments, makes the DLR165K for Bosch. Spectra Precision makes the same unit with their name on it, in a different color, and calles it the HD50 which sells for $179. The Bosch presently sells through Amazon for $144.46. Specs are the same. Why pay more? I have the Bosch and love it!

This is one of those nifty new gadget tools that actually works better than expected – and it quickly becomes a tool that you can’t do without. The accuracy is amazing and performs as advertised. It works great outdoors in place of a 100-foot tape and makes measuring landscaping layouts a breeze. Laser reflectors help in this case. When a dead tree is 80 feet from a building or power line, it is comforting to know that the tree is only 70 feet tall before you drop it. The DLR165K automatically calculates the height of an object by using the Pythagorean Theorem, a2+b2=c2. In such applications, measure in dark and cut in daylight. It is far easier to see the red-laser dot at night with objects over about 80 feet tall. To me, it is worth every penny.

I bought the Bosch after debating between Hilti PD40 and Bosch. For the money and options compared to Hilti, I think Bosch is the better choice. The Hilti at $175 more gives you a light up screen and can also shoot 300 feet. It cannot calculate the Pythagorean Theorem, which Bosch can. I gave the Bosch only 4 stars because I wish it could convert cubic feet into yards.

If you’re the type where a tape measure just isn’t quite accurate enough or you find yourself needing to measure spaces that are very difficult to reach, this is the product you need. I use it for remodeling work and it has proven invaluable for measuring, for example, the run along of the ceiling since, with remodeling, you can’t assume it’s exactly the same as the floor. I switch it to the metric system, since it is important to me that a particular piece must be 199mm instead the 197mm of the last piece. Highly recommended.

I do trim carpentry and build cabinets and needed something to give me fast accurate measurements for doing crown moldings and the Bosch delivered. It comes with a handy case that you can hang on your belt keeping it in reach. I use it for any measurement that would require me to bend the tape and try to guess what the reading would be or where the distance makes it difficult to accurately do with tape measure. It also has the ability to do continuous reading allowing you to aim at an object and move yourself forward or backward until you are the desired distance from the target object. A steady hand does help but the uses are endless due to its ability to read off its front edge, a tripod mount hole, off its back edge, or its extendable rod. It would be a good idea to make sure the tape measure you use for transferring the measurements matches the rangefinder before starting a job. The only negative I have discovered is that a measurement in feet and fractions of an inch are stored in memory and then redisplayed in decimal forcing me to then convert the number back into fractions. That said the display holds my measurement long enough for me to get my molding, measure, and make the cut before the display shuts off. I have recommended this device to all my friends who do a lot of measurements on their job.
